The next Stephen Glass?

Ryan Lizza of The New Republic wanders far afield in search of evidence that Virginia Gov. George Allen harbors secessionist sympathies and other dangerous traits. There's something conspiratorial in the insinuations: Are you now, or have you ever been, a shad planker?

Where's Richard Hofstadter when we need him?

Keith Thompson urges Sen. Allen to surrender peacefully.

Also observing the Lizza slime trail: Where I Stand, Kathleen Parker, David Holman, and Southern Appeal.

Mr. Lizza and his ilk seek to provoke racial animosity for their own hateful purposes. Sen. Allen's good will toward all Virginians, black and white, is so well known that he needs no defense against such scurrilous slander. Dishonest efforts by the likes of Mr. Lizza to heap shame upon Sen. Allen, upon Virginia and upon the South in general, are dishonorable and deserving of contempt.
